Diolite (Capillary Laser)
Our office utilizes the Diolite 532 laser for treatment of vascular and pigmented lesions. This laser allows for non-traumatic treatment of facial capillaries, age spots, moles or freckles that may be very noticeable. The mild and precise treatment characteristics of this laser provide consistent, targeted results without the need for anesthesia.
The lesions that are best treated by this procedure are: 1) Vascular lesions caused by abnormally large or numerous blood vessels located directly under the surface of the skin causing a reddened appearance. Spider veins (telangiectasia) are the most common vascular lesions; 2) Pigmented lesions are dark areas occurring when an abundance of melanocytes are found in the skin. These cells when overstimulated produce melanin, the culprit causing the formation of freckles, brown spots and moles.
The laser works by generating an intense beam of light. This beam brings energy to a specific site, through a small handpiece connected to the laser. The laser light is absorbed by oxyhemoglobin (bright red blood cells carrying oxygen) and melanin/pigment (black or brown pigment found in the skin). The light causes decomposition or destruction by heat of the unwanted cells while leaving the healthy cells intact.
Dr. Hand performs the Diolite laser treatment at our accredited outpatient surgical facility as an office procedure. Treatment times and intensity will vary dependent on the characteristics of the lesions and size of the areas being treated. Most treatments last less than 30 minutes. A film of cool gel will be applied to the affected area. A pencil thin hand piece will be used to direct the beam of laser light to the lesion(s). No other topical anesthesia is necessary. Most patients report discomfort similar to being “snapped with a rubber band”. The patient may experience a slight redness that disappears after 2 to 4 hours and occasionally minor swelling that resolves quickly. Rarely does bruising occur and normal activities may be resumed immediately.
The final results of the treatment by the Diolite laser are apparent within 10 to 14 days for vascular lesions and 2 to 6 weeks for pigmented lesions. Although lesions will often be corrected, new areas of capillary formation or darkness usually occur for most patients because of further aging changes. Touch-up treatments may be performed at 6 week or longer intervals to correct new lesions.
eMatrix™ (Sublative Rejuvenation):
eMatrix laser skin resurfacing is an FDA-cleared treatment that gently resurfaces the skin over 4 to 5 treatments. It tightens surface loose skin, improves skin texture and reduces the appearance of mild to moderate wrinkles, acne scarring and abdominal stretch marks. It also tightens pores and brightens the skin.
eMatrix is truly unique because it’s the newest resurfacing non-laser treatment that achieves results one gets with more aggressive laser treatments, while avoiding the lengthy downtime associated with more aggressive “ablative” procedures.
The secret to eMatrix / Sublative Rejuvenation is the “Radio Frequency” energy used and how that energy is delivered. During treatment, intense heat is generated under the surface of the skin without disrupting the skin’s surface in the process; (downtime is approximately 48 hours with mild roughness remaining for 3 to 5 days—make-up can be applied after the first 48 hours). eMatrix stimulates collagen and elastin production in the deep layers of the skin resulting in a tighter, smoother, more refined and brighter appearance to areas treated. Results continue over 3-5 months after the final treatment and can be maintained annually.
The mechanism by which sublative rejuvenation works is based on the fact that to achieve the best possible results, the energy, whether laser or light, must be delivered below the skin without overheating the top layer of the skin. This has been the challenge with other more aggressive treatments because they work by overheating the top layer of the skin to the point of complete ablation (removal), forcing new skin to develop.
Sublative Rejuvenation uses fractionated bi-polar radio frequency to penetrate through the skin, sending more energy beneath the surface of the skin to maximize collagen production, all while keeping the top layer of the skin intact. This is an important factor in why it’s safe for all skin types, and requires less downtime than other treatment methods for the skin to heal. A full face treatment is usually finished in 30 minutes. Our office offers a local anesthetic cream to be used prior to the treatment to minimize discomfort. A combination of Benadryl and Advil is recommended to be taken immediately following the treatment. Most redness will have dissipated by the following day.
Sublative Rejuvenation is also an effective alternative to laser treatment to reduce the appearance of acne scarring. Since the treatment uses radiofrequency instead of light, the chances of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, a skin discoloration that can occur in patients with darker skin, are greatly reduced.
Elos™ SRA (Intense Pulsed light plus RF)
ELOS™ technology safely and comfortably fades the appearance of rosacea, spider veins, skin imperfections caused by sun damage, age spots, and uneven skin tones created by brown and red spots. SRA-IPL treatment is appropriate for the face, neck, de´colletage and arms. Unlike the Diolite laser a larger handpiece is used and the entire area is treated instead of small isolated areas.
The combined bi-polar radiofrequency and light energies of elos technology precisely and safely target pigmented lesions such as freckles, sunspots and age spots. Treatment with IPL plus radiofrequency results in encouraging dermal remodelling by stimulating collagen, thus improving skin texture and appearance such as fine lines. It will also correct skin imperfections caused by sun damage and fade or dissipate dilated capillaries, freckles, pigmentation and sunspots. Color may be removed from acne scarring and redness associated with rosacea as well. The anticipated result is evening out the skin tone with a smoother appearance.
Our office utilizes an anesthetic cream for this treatment prior to starting the procedure to minimize discomfort. Patients with lighter skin types are the best candidates for this procedure. Most patients require 3 to 4 treatments 1 month apart for maximum improvement. Touch-up treatments are encouraged yearly with appropriate sunscreening to protect the results.
