Out of Town Patient Consultation and Surgical Planning
We are now a global community that searches not for the best cosmetic surgeon in our respective region, but for the best cosmetic surgeon in our state or even country to meet our specific needs. The internet has made it easy to investigate procedures and doctors. Patients travel to our office from all over the US and even from Europe to meet with Dr. Hand. For that reason, our office has developed a system that allows us to provide appropriate surgical consultation followed by the procedure and follow-up care.
Our office has secured corporate rates with an incredible bed and breakfast as well as several hotels in our area that are both great places to home base from but also convenient to our office. The San Francisco Bay area is virtually boundless in the wonderful experiences that are available. The Napa/Sonoma Wine Country is an hour away in one direction, the beach an hour in another direction. The culture and beauty of San Francisco can be accessed from a local ferry or a short ½ hour drive over the spectacular Golden Gate Bridge. Of course, Marin County is one of the most beautiful areas of all.
Most patients fly into San Francisco International Airport (SFO) or Oakland International Airport (OAK). Both airports offer automobile rentals, and car services are available as well for transportation. Marin Airporter is a bus service the will pick up at SFO and drop off 1 mile from our office. Our office is happy to help with travel arrangements, or lodging, restaurant or activity suggestions.
Consultation and Surgical Scheduling
The first step in consulting with Dr. Hand for facial or body procedures is to submit photographs via the internet or mail with a request for his evaluation in terms of candidacy for a specific procedure of the body. A patient information and general health questionnaire must accompany your request. Generally, Dr. Hand requires a close frontal and side view of the entire area you are requesting correction of as well as a back view for body sculpting procedures. It is better to send too many photos than not enough and he may request additional photos after evaluating the first group. Your medical care and health are our utmost concern. It is absolutely necessary to honestly disclose any systemic medical conditions, ex. high blood pressure, diabetes or asthma, during your initial web consultation. Some patients will not be candidates for certain operations and therefore traveling a long distance may be completely unnecessary. Once your photographs and information are reviewed by Dr. Hand and it is determined that you area good candidate for the procedure requested, our patient care coordinator will contact you by e-mail or telephone, as per your request, regarding costs, recovery and any questions related to your procedure. Dr. Hand is pleased to personally discuss the procedure with you. If you decide to pursue surgery with Dr. Hand, it is absolutely necessary that you obtain clearance from your regular doctor and obtain lab tests that Dr. Hand requires, 2 weeks prior to your surgical date.
Once you have been determined to be an excellent candidate for the surgery that you and Dr. Hand mutually agree will address your concerns, our office will set up a preoperative consultation scheduled for 2 days prior to your surgery, a surgical date and follow-up care. When you have decided to proceed with surgery, a non-refundable deposit of 10% of the fees is due. The remaining balance of your procedure costs is due 2 weeks prior to your surgical date. A package of forms with preoperative and postoperative instructions and any additional forms will be mailed at the time of booking the surgery. We can also help with an aftercare facility if you wish or transportation and hotel information. Most procedures will be performed in our accredited Marin County surgical facility. Occasionally, Dr. Hand utilizes Marin General Hospital with an overnight stay option.
At your preoperative consultation, you will meet with Dr. Hand and the surgical procedure will be discussed thoroughly. All consents will be signed, medical photography done and prescriptions dispensed.
Dr. Hand requires that all patients agree to stay within the area for 5 to 14 days, dependent on the specific surgery performed and amount of follow-up care and healing time required.

Postoperative Recovery Care:
It is recommended that patients have someone with them (friend or relative) to take them to their hotel after surgery, stay the night with them and bring them back to the office the next day for their 1 day checkup. If you are visiting from out-of-town or simply would like highly professional postoperative care without burdening friends or family, we can arrange for excellent care at an aftercare facility. The facility that our office prefers to utilize for aftercare is The Post Op Recovery Place (415) 642-1201. Their website address is www.postoprecoveryplace.com. In addition to being a lovely, pampering location to recover and rest, the patient can relax in knowing that a staff member will pick you up after surgery, follow Dr. Hand's aftercare requirements and provide transportation to our office the following morning for a postoperative appointment.

Our office prefers the Leonhard Suite, a guestroom at parking lot level with wheelchair access for immediate postoperative patients. Several other rooms are easily accessible (the Gerstle Suite and the Lodge Suite) by an outside entrance. For the patient that can climb stairs, charming cottages and a carriage house are available with living rooms and kitchens, a true retreat away from home.
