| Will it hurt? |
| |
For most procedures, you'll be sedated or asleep throughout the
entire operation. At your preoperative visit, you will be given
or prescibed pain medication to be used after your procedure.
|
| How long after surgery can
patients resume regular exercise? |
| |
A patient may resume regular exercise based on the operation
performed. All patients are encouraged to start slowly walking
on the second postoperative day. Regular activities may be resumed
by the 7th day and more vigorous activities at 2 weeks after your
procedure. Abdominoplasty requires approximately 4 to 6 weeks
of recuperation before returning to vigorous exercise.
|
| How long
will I be out of work? |
| |
Most patients are able to return to work in five to seven days
following breast surgery or liposuction. Sutures are removed within
5 to 7 days after most facial procedures and makeup may be worn
at that time. Bruising and swelling may take 2 to 6 weeks to subside.
Abdominoplasty can require 4 to 6 weeks off if you have a physically
strenuous job, otherwise, you should be able to return to work
in 10 days with lifting restrictions.
|
| How can
I hide my surgical areas while I return to normal? |
| |
Cosmetic makeup techniques can be used soon after surgery to
cover discolorations, and to hide incision lines. Dr. Hand will
discuss post-operative camouflage makeup with you prior to your
surgery. Makeup is discouraged until after sutures are removed
and wounds are healed. Most body procedures are easily camouflaged
by loose, comfortable clothing.
|
| When can I resume smoking
and alcohol intake? |
| |
Smoking should be discontinued for at least 2 weeks prior to
surgery and 2 weeks post surgery. Cosmetic surgery results will
always be better for those who chose to discontinue smoking permanently.
Alcohol should be avoided for 1 week prior to surgery and 2 weeks
post surgery.
|
| Are there any medications
I should avoid before surgery? |
| |
Yes, at your consultation you will be given a list. All non-steroidal
anti-inflammatories (motrin, advil, etc.) should be discontinued
2 weeks prior to surgery. Tylenol is OK. A regular multivitamin
is advisable but mega doses of other vitamins is to be discontinued,
Dr. Hand will review your regular medications at your consultation
and advise you of their impact on your surgery.
|
| Can anyone have surgery at
the outpatient surgical facility? |
| |
No, only people in good health may have their procedures done
at our accredited surgical facility. Patient's who are in good
health, but have a documented health history which makes it advisable
to have the procedure performed at the hospital, are scheduled
at Marin General Hospital. Also, for those who wish to be hospitalized
overnight a 23-hour stay option is available.
|
| What options are available
for out of town patients? |
| |
Our office has corporate rates available at a local motel, ½
mile from our office. Our office staff is happy to make your lodging
arrangements for you when you decide to have surgery.
|
| Can I go home alone or do
I need someone with me? |
| |
It is mandatory that you have someone with you after surgery
for the rest of the day. Most of the time, you will just need
a hand to help you to the restroom and someone to assist you with
medications and nourishment. If you feel that you will need additional
professional health care, arrangements can be made with a home
health agency or we can refer you to an outpatient care facility
that will pick you up, care for you and return you to our office
the next day.
|
| How often will I need to see
Dr. Hand after my procedure? |
| |
Generally, Dr. Hand will see you at 1 day, 4 days and 10 days
after surgery. Appointments are then made based on the rate of
your recovery. Of course, anytime you have a question or would
like Dr. Hand to see you in between scheduled appointments, he
is happy to do so. Your comfort level during your recovery is
important to us.
